1944 ~ 2019

William C. Foster, Esq., ("Bill"), was the third child born to William and Marie Foster on October 30, 1944 in Philadelphia, PA. He lived with his parents and sisters Barbara and Marie, in Upper Darby. Bill graduated from St. Joseph's Prep Class of 1962, and University of Notre Dame Class of 1966, then attended Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey School of Law in Newark, NJ, graduating with his J.D. in 1970. He dazzled everyone he met with his brilliance and athleticism from a young age. But, true to the Jesuit values that he learned at the Prep, he was a "man for and with others" and lived his life seeking ways to help and support his family, friends, colleagues and clients, rather than to receive accolades for his accomplishments.

Bill's life changed significantly for the better when he met the love of his life, Kathleen ("Kathie") Galligher, on a blind date arranged by their mutual friend, Jean Mahoney, as a young lawyer. He was enthralled with Kathie's beauty, keen sense of humor, love of animals and fun-loving spirit. Kathie was the perfect "yin" for Bill's "yang," helping him to relax while sailing on their boat, the "Kathleen," sitting on their deck watching the sunset, and reading books together on the beach hand in hand. Kathie and Bill also reveled in family celebrations, throwing many of their own for their extended families at their home in West Chester, PA, or at their home-away-from-home in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. They shared a love of the beach and of their home by the sea, first settling into a small blue house on 52nd Street in Sea Isle that they lovingly refurbished, and then moving across the street to a larger home so that they could entertain their large group of friends and family. Kathie and Bill cherished each other and had a beautiful life together for over 43 years.

Bill was also an accomplished attorney who truly loved his work and serving his many clients, including several who had become his friends over the years. Bill especially enjoyed mentoring his younger colleagues at Marshall Dennehey, while learning from them at the same time. Bill built a stellar reputation as an expert in the defense of insurance coverage and bad faith claims, construction litigation, and product liability matters. He took more than 100 cases to trial and successfully defended many of these in front of a jury. Bill also was an adept teacher of the law, presenting to clients regarding bad faith issues, and serving as a frequent panelist at seminars relating to bad faith. Bill was recognized as a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer every year from 2006-2019.

Bill lost his beloved wife, Kathie, to cancer just two months ago. He was devastated by her loss, but ready to fight the toughest battle of his life when he was diagnosed with lung cancer just two weeks after her death. Bill was strong in mind and spirit throughout his treatment, listening attentively to the doctors and nurses who cared for him, and helping them to coordinate their efforts on his behalf. He also welcomed the support of his family and friends even when he was not feeling his best. He took great comfort in the prayers and love provided by the many family members and friends who visited, called, texted and wrote notes to him, all of which helped him rally to the end.

Bill is now at peace and reunited with Kathie (and no doubt, their beloved dogs, George, Morton and Abigail, and their many cats, including Eloise and Bonnie Rose) in heaven. His legacy lives on in his family, his friends and his accomplishments in the practice of law. He will be especially missed in his role as the patriarch of the family by his many nieces and nephews who looked to him for guidance after their own parents passed away. We are all so grateful for the time we had with Kathie and Bill, and we will hold those happy memories close in our hearts.

Relatives & friends are invited to his viewing on Thursday August 1st, 6-8 PM at The D'Anjolell Memorial Home, 2811 West Chester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008 and Friday morning, August 2nd, 9:30 AM followed by his Funeral Mass 10:30 AM at Saints Peter and Paul Church, 1325 Boot Rd, West Chester, PA 19380. Interment Calvary Cemetery. There will also be a Memorial Mass on Friday, August 9th at 11 AM at St. Joseph's Church, 4308 Landis Ave. Sea Isle City, NJ 08243 with a reception at the SIC Yacht Club to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathie's and Bill's memory may be made to the American Lung Association, 527 Plymouth Road, Suite 415, Plymouth Meeting PA 19462.

Condolence & Memory Journal

It has been a long time since I actually saw Bill but he is one of those exceptional people who leave a lasting impression on you because they are so special. He was a rare person who maintained his kindness, compassion and gentleman's demeanor at all times. I remember Kathie fondly as well and although I only met her once in person I was impressed with the incredible bond she and Bill shared, one to be envied. A hell of a guy, a terrific lawyer, a good, good person. Rest in peace Bill and know that you are unforgettable.

I am terribly sad to hear that Bill Foster has left our midst. Having had the privilege of working with Bill for a number of years, I was able to observe his many qualities in action. A true gentleman and model counselor, Bill was quick to grasp the situation but judicious in action. I can assure you that he achieved 'good works' thereby.
While we will not see each other again in this life, I am indeed grateful that our paths crossed. My sincerest condolences to his beloved family and friends who will miss his company greatly.

I am incredibly sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I worked with Bill at Marshall Dennehey, he was diligent in his work and above all a kind and generous person, to say he will be missed is an understatement

I was a class mate of Bills at the Prep. He was an imposing physical specimen and a member of the football team , I remember having dinner with him and his Mom and Dad with flounder Bill got from the boats in Sea Isle. Bill encouraged me during some hard times .he was a good friend to me even after many years of separation. When I reconnected with him after all those years he was still the decent , honest and caring kid I knew at the Prep . I admired Bill,s decency and honesty. He was a consummate gentleman . I will miss him ...

I was a classmate of Bill's at St Joseph's Prep and Notre Dame . For many years , we played handball with friends at the old Philadelphia Athletic Club and later in Springfield . We enjoyed Phillies games with Prep classmate , Dan Thistle . He was truly a gentle giant without a mean bone in his body . Bill was a low key but fierce advocate as a lawyer with an outstanding reputation .
A defining characteristic of Bill's was his constant love for Kathy and all his family .
Well done good and faithful servant .

I was a classmate of Bill's at the Prep and have many fond memories of our contacts over the years. He was a regular at all our reunions and a great one for the "stories." We often recalled stealing into Vespers boathouse on a regular basis one summer while in college and taking a double out on the river.....in more innocent times. The class of '62 will miss this guy for sure. He was a prince.
