Tribute & Message From The Family

Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather

Nussdorfer
1923~2019

Adrian Gips Nussdorfer (20 November 1923--30 August 2019). Born in Cleveland to Theodore J. Nussdorfer and Marie Forshew Nussdorfer, Adrian grew up in Avon Lake, Ohio on a vegetable farm with his brother Theodore Jr. and his cousins Burr and Mary Nussdorfer. He graduated from Western Reserve Academy (where he lettered in three sports) in Hudson, Ohio in 1941 and attended Iowa State University before joining the Naval Air Corps during WWII. After the war, Adrian enrolled in the University of Chicago where he earned a master's degree in political science in 1950 with a thesis on Winston Churchill's philosophy of foreign affairs in the interwar period. At Chicago, he developed a life-long admiration for the philosophers Aristotle and David Hume. Adrian married fellow student Jessica Elizabeth Rattray of River Forest, Illinois in 1948 and worked part-time in the steel mills while he completed his degree. In 1952 he was sent to southern Europe by the Oliver Farm Equipment Company to develop markets for farm machinery. After his return he joined the sales division of the Sun Oil Company, eventually moving to the Philadelphia office. After retiring in 1982 Adrian devoted himself to his vegetable garden. His tomatoes were prized by the whole neighborhood; he started as many as a hundred plants each February in orange juice cartons. He also contributed countless hours to the activities of his children and their friends in the Rose Tree Pony Club. From his early days on the farm, Adrian had been a passionate tennis player and bird watcher, and summer trips to Lake Clear in the Adirondacks had introduced him to the joys of fishing. Later two of his favorite places to fish were the Tuckaseegee River in North Carolina as a guest of the Clarkes, dear family friends, and Dacey Pond in Maine. He enjoyed exploring nature with family and friends on camping and rafting trips in national parks across the country. Adrian also loved to sing and wished his sports' obligations had not prevented him from joining his high school Glee Club. He got his chance singing with the "Nasal 19" in his college fraternity (Phi Gamma Delta), and in his final years took special pleasure in participating in the Lima Estates chorus (bass section). He especially enjoyed the music of Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra who always inspired a dancing step or two. Adrian was a devoted caretaker of the many dogs, cats, and horses that lived at the family home, Milbrae. He is survived by his wife of almost 71 years Jessica, four children, Laurie (Nicholas Adams), Adrian Gips Jr., Barbara (Gary Eblen), and Emily (Kenneth Higginbotham), as well as two grandchildren, Michael and Jessica Eblen (Ryan Dunnavant). He is also survived by his cousin Mary Nussdorfer Hennessy and his sister-in-law Rebecca Ganoe Nussdorfer Tuttle as well as three nephews, Daniel, David and Theodore III, and their families. He is remembered as a beloved husband, father, friend and farmer. Services are private. Donations in Adrian's memory may be made to the Scholarship Fund, Western Reserve Academy, Hudson OH or the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Ithaca NY.
