William Brooks Johnson

July 25, 1931- February 3, 2019

William Brooks "Bill" Johnson, 87, of Malvern, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 3, 2019. Bill was born on July 25, 1931 in Piqua, Ohio. He was the son of the late James Brooks and Mary Robbins Johnson.

Bill graduated from Piqua Central High School in 1949 as valedictorian. He received a bachelor's degree from Denison University in 1953 where he majored in Government and was a member of the American Commons Club and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He received his Juris Doctorate from Ohio State University in 1956. He met the love of his life, Jeanette Ethel Smith, at Denison and they married on December 28, 1953. Bill always said the outstanding decision of his life was marrying Jeanette.

Bill served in the naval reserves during the Korean Conflict. He joined the credit department of Electric Auto Light in 1956 before moving over to the credit department of Sun Oil Company in 1957 where he worked the rest of his career in various positions as a credit manager and legal consultant, retiring in 1990. Bill and his family lived in Columbus, Ohio, Sylvania, Ohio, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and Dayton, Ohio, before finally settling in Malvern in 1969.

Bill enjoyed classical music, local theater, reading and playing games. He kept copious notes listing the books he read and records of family game scores stretching over decades. As a young man, he played the clarinet in his high school and college bands and briefly professionally for the Elks band; later he held season tickets to several local theaters and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He served as the President of the neighborhood Spring Mill Farms Civic Association and was awarded the community outstanding citizenship award in 1976. He was affiliated with the Paoli United Methodist Church. He was very supportive of his family and took great interest in the lives and careers of his children.

Bill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanette; his five children, Lynette Blackmon (Bruce) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jeffrey Brooks Johnson (Mary Jane) of San Clemente, California, Lysbeth Gordon (David) of Forest Knolls, California, Dr. Jeremy Johnson of Helena, Montana, and Jason Johnson (Alyssa) of Carlsbad, California; and his six grandchildren, Christopher Blackmon (Christina), Michael Blackmon (Katie), Jennifer Johnson, Joshua Brooks Johnson, Kasia Johnson, and Cole Johnson.
